Mongo Hill is home to another small community in the north of the small Eastern Caribbean island of Montserrat. During the penitential season of Lent, when many concentrate on more deliberate engagement in spiritual disciplines such as intense meditation and fasting, there are, as always, many helps from nature. One regular and awe inspiring natural phenomenon is the predictable “outbreak” of Lent Lilies (not Narcissus but orange-flowered members of the Lililacea).

I like to stand in my friend’s backyard and drink the scenes of flowering lilies before me. Here is one. I call this “The Glory of Mongo Hill”.
